orange oil + alcohol = cleaner

From the whimsically-named "Gaurd Duck" at Mental Militia:

I use cheap vodka to clean house. It has orange oil in it and both that and the alcohol are good degreasers.
It is called Burnet's Orange Flavored Vodka. Don't drink it, it's crappy.
Cleans the stove good though, and our teapot, and it even gets the smell out of spaghetti sauce jars!
It gets the tea stain out of enamel cups & sanitizes counter tops after cutting meats.

patch up the bald spots in the lawn

I am fascinated by infomercials, and this is one TV product that looks useful: Keep your lawn green all year long!

Just pour on some of the special "green powder" (optimized mix of grass seed and fertilizer) and water it. Go green lawn! On the environmental side, is should be noted that proper nutrition for your grass helps it stay greener with less water.

green ideas from old buildings

My 100-year-old house is creaky, drafty, and uninsulated, but it does have some benefits.  Not the least of which is the gigantic shade tree on the West side which drops its leaves as soon as the weather cools down.
